Goodyear run flat tyres were called EMT (extended
Mobility technology) however because most people didn’t know what EMT
meant and they were essentially Run flat tyres, Goodyear decided to
change EMT and make it simple by just writing ‘Run On Flat’ on all their
run flats. Which makes sense as other manufactures are still writing
‘RFT’ and ‘SSR’ which just confuses people. The acronym ‘RF’ which
stands for Reinforced also confuses some motorists thinking it’s a run
flat. The Goodyear Run on flat technology is a self-supporting tyre. The
concept and design is the same as other manufactures that make the
self-supporting run flats. The only difference is the tread design and
obviously the performance of the tyre. Goodyear initially started to
make the Goodyear NCT5 tread design with the run flat capabilities now
Goodyear makes run on flats in a number of sizes and other patterns.
With all run flat makes there is still a long debate on whether a run flat is repairable. BMW recently said that they should not be repaired because of a safely issues, as when run flats are driven on at very low or no pressure the tyre looses a lot of rubber from within the rubber structure.
